Four Things to Consider When Letting Go

Letting go is a process. It can take a lot of time to get to a place where you feel like you are ready to let go over whatever it is that’s burdening you. During your journey to letting go there are some things you should consider about yourself, your situation, and what you are wanting to let go of.

Whether it is a traumatic memory, an old flame, family relationships, or a nasty job, letting go is necessary. You do not want to carry the heavy weight of things that no longer serve you. When you are looking to let go, it is important to do so with awareness. Below are 4 major things to consider when it comes to letting go.

Is it really serving you?

Ask yourself if the thing you are pondering is really serving you. To know if it is you can ask yourself some clarifying questions:

  • How does it make you feel to hold on to this?

  • How is holding on affecting your behavior?

  • Is it holding you back from living the life that you want to live?

  • Would you be happier if you let it go?

Is it the right time to let go?

Timing is everything in life, and letting go is no exception. There are times when it will be clear that a situation or relationship has run its course and there is no way to save it. Although it isn’t always easy to know when you should let go and move on, it is possible to gain clarity.

Honestly ask yourself:

  • Are my needs being met?

  • Do I have reasons or excuses for holding on?

  • What are the immediate benefits/consequences of letting go today?

  • What are the long term benefits/consequences of letting go?

Is it possible to let go?

The longer and harder we hold on, the harder it becomes to let go of those things we're holding onto. Many times the things and people we are attached to are reflections of deeper fears we hold. Other times they're just habits we've gotten used to and that have become unconscious. So yes, it is possible to let go, and through that we can overcome underlying fears and habits.

What could happen if you don’t let go?

Consider what your life would look like if you don’t let go. How would you feel in 1 year, 5 years, or even 40 years? Your intuition knows whether what you are doing feels is moving you in the right direction or not. If the thought of not letting go and still having the same person, thing, or situation in life feels dreadful, then letting go is imperative.

Letting Go is Healing

When going through the journey that is life, letting go happens all the time. It is a process, and it does not always feel easy. But, once you do it you will feel a weight lifted off of your shoulders. Things will fall into place once you make the space for it to happen. Every day that you move further away from the past attachments is more healing.
